Sources: LeBron James Was Sincere About Not Knowing His Future During All-Star

Sources close to LeBron James believe he was sincere when he told reporters at NBA All-Star Weekend that he does not know what his future holds. Teammates and coaches with the Los Angeles Lakers have been privately speculating about what comes next, with no clear consensus emerging, according to people familiar with the situation.
James will not have full control of his destiny if he chooses to continue playing as he is on an expiring contract. The 41-year-old will enter the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, with limited suitors and scarce cap space across the league. His tenure with the Lakers, which has been the longest consecutive stretch of his career, could end after this season.
One league source told The Athletic that James is shrewd enough to avoid permanent decisions amid the emotional weight of an 82-game season. His most consequential career choices in 2010, 2014 and 2018 were all made well after seasons concluded.
James addressed his uncertainty directly at All-Star Weekend.
"When I know, you guys will know," he told reporters. He added, "I want to live," when asked about next season.
James has never carried less responsibility on a roster. Once he accepted the Lakers' commitment to building around Luka Doncic, it created a degree of professional freedom he has never previously experienced. His on-court demeanor has reflected that liberation, with moments of levity becoming more frequent.
James is still performing at a high level, recording highlight dunks during All-Star Sunday and scoring 20 first-half points the previous night at the Golden State Warriors.
