Warriors Owner Joe Lacob Rejects Tanking: Not In My DNA Or This Organization's DNA

Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob delivered a firm public stance against tanking Thursday, stating the practice is incompatible with his organization's values despite a difficult season decimated by injuries. His comments came following a 121-110 home loss to the Boston Celtics.

"It is not in my DNA, nor in this organization's DNA, to do that," Lacob said. "This is sports. We're supposed to play to win. And that's just not a way I would be comfortable, ever, trying to improve our team."

Lacob acknowledged that some Warriors fans have called for the franchise to lose games for improved draft positioning. He said he would never act on that sentiment, and does not believe coach Steve Kerr is built that way either.

The comments aligned with Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia, who publicly condemned tanking earlier Thursday on social media. Lacob cited Ishbia's remarks directly.

Golden State is navigating a turbulent stretch. Stephen Curry remains sidelined with a lingering knee injury for at least four more games. Jimmy Butler suffered a season-ending ACL tear last month. The franchise also failed to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo at the trade deadline.

Despite those setbacks, Lacob expressed measured optimism. "We can still be in the playoffs. We still have Steph Curry. I think we can upset some people."

Kristaps Porzingis made his Warriors debut Thursday, scoring 12 points after arriving via trade for Jonathan Kuminga earlier this month.
